Barbara Lovercheck

Job Description:

I teach students in math and science classes.  This year I have Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and Algebra 2, Advanced Math, Geometry, and Chemistry.

Who has been your mentor?
My dad is my mentor. He is a math teacher as well as a high school
principal. I have always looked to him as a good example of what being
a teacher is all about. What I find the most interesting, though, is
that occasionally he will ask ME a question about what to do. This is
really a cool feeling!

If you could be any animal, what would it be and why?
I have no aspirations to be another animal besides just a human being.
I think we have been made just the way we are for a good reason.

Who is one famous person you would like to meet?
I would love to meet Albert Einstein, even though he is deceased. As
far as a living person, I think I would like to meet Glenn Seaborg (a
very famous chemist at UC-Berkeley who has discovered several new
elements on the periodic table).

What is your favorite restaurant?
My favorite restaurant is Spaghetti Works, although Whiskey Creek is a
close second. I love the spaghetti with white clam sauce at Spaghetti
Works. The baby back ribs at Whiskey Creek with a side of baked sweet
potato is also near the top of the list.

What are a few of your pet peeves?
Probably my biggest pet peeve is when people do not use the talents they
have been given. Some people have the natural ability to do well in
school, or in public speaking, or in any number of other things. But
these same people often waste their talents. Some would call this
laziness, which is another pet peeve. One other pet peeve is rudeness.
I really hate it when someone is rude or uncouth to others.

What is your hidden talent?
I am a voracious reader and have quite a large vocabulary (that I
don't often use, because many people don't understand what
I'm talking about).

If you could leave behind one piece of advice, what would it be?
Do your best in everything you do. Don't settle for "good
enough."

What was your favorite cartoon growing up?
I was not allowed to watch much TV as a child, but if we went to a
friend's house, I loved to watch Scooby Doo. Sesame Street is not
a cartoon, but I did watch a lot of Sesame Street and Mr. Roger's
Neighborhood (my parents DID let me watch educational TV).

What is your biggest fear?
Oceans or other bodies of water. I cannot swim and I am deathly afraid
of drowning. Heights is a close second. And flying over an ocean
(heights and water!) is something I don't plan to do anytime soon.

What is your favorite food and drink?
Spaghetti is my favorite food (see question #5). Cherry Pepsi is my
favorite drink.

What is your favorite T.V. show?
Wow! I have lots of favorites here: House, Monk, Law and Order, Law
and Order SVU, Law and Order Criminal Intent, CSI, CSI Miami, CSI NY,
Monday Night Football, Sunday Night Football, and there are more, to be
sure!

Where would you go, if you could go back in time and why?

I would like to go back in time and visit with Isaac Newton. He was
such an important historical figure in both math and science.

What is your most memorable moment at Humphrey Public School?
I have been at Humphrey long enough to have many. It is hard to choose.
I would say it was probably the day that Preston Fox asked me if I was
pregnant or just gaining weight. (I was expecting Joseph, by the way,
but wasn't going to tell the kids just yet.)  Also I would have to say the day of the Science room fire!!

Most embarrassing moment? When a former student said "Ok Mrs. Lovercheck you are either gaining a lot of weight or you're pregnant, now which is it?" (And at the time I was expecting, but had not told any students yet.)
